Top 10 Items for New Shooters - from USPSA
- Safety-consciousness is our hallmark:
- treat every firearm as a loaded one!
- never point a firearm at anything I am not willing to destroy.
- be sure of my target and what is behind it before firing.
- keep my finger off the trigger until my muzzle is down range.
- Handle guns only in a safe area.
- Keep the gun in holster, hammer down, and unlocked until told to "Load and Make Ready" by the Range Officer.
- Never break the 180!
- Careless shooters get disqualified (DQed)!. Examples:
- finger in trigger guard during movement or while reloading
- muzzle pointed uprange (breaking the 180)
- dropped gun during course
- accidental discharge
- failure to obey the Range Officer's instructions
- handling ammunition in a Safety Area
- Range Commands
- "Load and Make Ready"
- "Are you Ready?"
- "Standby"
- "If you are finished, Unload and Show Clear"
- "If Clear, Hammer Down, Holster"
- "Range is Clear"
- Are you new to the sport? Nervous about it? Forget speed! Walk through the match. It's the smart move. Speed comes naturally with practice.
- Volunteer to tape targets and pick up brass when the "Range is Clear" and targets have been scored.
