NOTE: You must pre-register to attend this seminar -- I need a completed application and seminar fee by the first of February so we can make sure we have required materials on-hand.
The upcoming USPSA Range Officer Seminar is scheduled for February 27th & 28th at the Oklahoma City Gun Club. The seminar will be taught by Carl Schmidt. If you’d like to read a little bit about him, try this link to his bio on the NROI website: http://www.nroi.org/archives/carl_schmidt.html -- impressive. The seminar is open to any USPSA member – you do not need to be a member of the OKC Gun Club. If you are not yet a USPSA member, you can sign up online – http://uspsa.org – and them put “pending” on the attached application form where it asks for your USPSA number.
The first day and a part of the second will be done in the classroom environment – lecture, practical exercises, discussion, demonstrations, etc. Later the second day we will move to the Action Shooting area for some live fire practice where everyone gets a chance to RO [and also shoot] a simple stage. You won’t need a firearm until that Sunday. You should bring your USPSA rulebook to the class, and something to write with. We will have all the other course material available. I’ll try and have a few extra rulebooks on hand, but I’m assuming that everyone already has one.
We will hold the classroom portion of the seminar in the Shotgun Club House at the OKC Gun Club – NOT the main clubhouse. For those unfamiliar, the Shotgun range is the left turn a few hundred yards before the turn-in to the action pistol ranges on Hiwassee Rd. I’ll make sure the gate is open by 7:30 or so. The club house is very comfortable and all the necessary amenities are available. Saturday will be a full day; other RO seminars I’ve attended in the past finished up early afternoon on Sunday. Here is a link to a map of the club facilities: http://ipsc.okcgunclub.org/directions.html
With 3-Gun matches starting up again and a lot of obvious interest, I’ve asked Carl if he can do a segment on 3-Gun competition. I haven’t heard back yet, but the issues, commands, and procedures are very similar anyway – just some added complexity with multiple firearms, proper grounding, etc.
Having been a CRO for a number of years and having participated in several of these seminars, I can tell you that this is a fantastic way to learn a lot about our sport. You gain a lot of insights on safety, stage design, how to play a more active role in running a match, and you can be a better ‘advocate’ for our sport in introducing newer shooters. It’s well worth the time and modest cost.
Perfect segue: USPSA charges us $40 per shooter, with a minimum of 20 shooters. They cover some fees, as the sponsor of the seminar, we cover others. Our objective is to get as many interested IPSC shooters trained as possible – it’s better for everyone, including the future of the sport. We decided to charge the direct USPSA cost only -- $40, and we’ll take care of the rest of the expenses incurred through the club.
What’s next: Attached is an application form which needs to be filled out and returned to me, along with a check for $40 per participant. Make checks payable to: OKC Gun Club - IPSC Division. I would like to get them all within the next couple of weeks, since I will then notify USPSA of the exact count of registered participants so they can ship the seminar materials to us ahead of time.
